We all know that cruelty and greed of this caliber exist in the world; we hope we never end up on a collision course with it. We'd like to think that we know how we would respond when our own sense of right and wrong is in the crucible, but every once in a while, a book comes along to remind us that, no, we don't.
 
The plot unfolds with intense Stephen King style storytelling, but there's something very Cormac McCarthy about the portrayal of Ford, McCallum and Ferguson. The story is about good and evil, damnation and redemption. The author won me over with his fine craftsmanship in the opening pages, and once I was hooked, I couldn't look away, even though I'm not usually a big reader of books that take me to the darkest side of human behavior. A car crash is such a credible, instantly relatable way to slam characters together, and everything that comes after is almost inevitable, given the nature of people in general and these entirely believable characters in particular.
 
I've recommended this book many times since I read it, and (perhaps the highest praise) had a horrible nightmare inspired by it weeks after I'd stared with dry eyeballs at the final paragraphs.

I became interested in this book after it was recommended to me by another author, and as a result of the string of top star reviews the book has received.Being of the belief that reader reviews are generally very reliable when in good number,I got a copy on kindle. I do not usually read thriller or suspense titles, though I'm always looking for those with an original twist or which are unusually well written, and this promised - and delivered - on both fronts. From the very start of this book, I was, as many other reviews have stated, gripped by the off-the-wall (but also familiar) characters, the twisting narrative and the fine pace and tone of the writing. The story builds with a deliberate and unrelenting pace, not rushed but judged to let events unfold with real tension. I don't like giving plot summaries, so I won't, but I very much recommend this title as a great read, fresh in the genre, tense and with a nicely sinister eye for when the seemingly ordinary and mundane can yield real threat value. I'm looking forward to Logan's next one.

The Survival of Thomas Ford attracted me a while back for two main reasons - the title and the cover. Both hinted at darkness and mystery and left me intrigued as to what the story within was all about. Having now read the novel I can see how fitting is the word 'survival' and how pertinent is the use of shadows, dark and light on the cover. I shan't give away any of the plot here but I will speak about the writing. I must confess to not quite knowing how the author has achieved to create scenes and characters that appear more real and memorable to me now than when I first read the novel a couple of weeks ago. It is that fact alone that has led me to write this review for, initially, as soon as I read the book, I felt a little disappointed in it, let down in some way. Now I love books and I will defend books I love to anyone. Perhaps it was because I had read it in amongst some of the nineteenth century classics? Who knows? What I believe now though is that I was disappointed not WHEN I finished it but BECAUSE I'd finished. I had somehow turned into the reading equivalent of a sulky child who is angry at ice-cream because he's eaten it all and there is none left! The descriptions, the dialogue, the set-pieces and the pace are all first class. You can see the characters, you can hear them, and you will most certainly remember them. All I can say is read this book. If it has the same effect on you as it did on me then great. And if it doesn't, it's nobody's fault - and there is always ice-cream!

I'll be publishing a new ebook in the very near future, a short story collection entitled STORM DAMAGE, consisting of ten stories totalling about 200 pages; with subject matter ranging from NAPOLEON’S CHILD, where a young boy appears inexplicably out of a desert one night…to UNICORN ONE, the tale of a strange choice of astronaut for Scotland’s first ever Independent Space Program…to THE AIRMAN, a ghost story about a World War Two bombing raid over Dresden that ends up in modern India…
Also stories in there about a very strange circus at the edge of the known world; a young, wounded man just returned from World War 1 who encounters even more evil when he gets home; an old man who tries to recreate a lost love; and a meeting between a pig and a wolf on a moonlit hillside...
So it won't be short of variety!
The final story in the collection, called Sometimes All the World Comes Down, was originally published by Picador in a paperback anthology that was sold in most countries of the world (Japan to South America, Africa to Europe, America to Australia), edited by Ali Smith and Toby Litt...Muriel Spark (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), Fay Weldon, David Mitchell,  and Maggie O' Farrell also had stories in that anthology (which was called NEW WRITING 13, more info on my website www.johnaalogan.com)
I suppose I've always wondered ever since if I'd do anything more with that story, and now I find that it ends the collection as though it was always meant to do so (the other 9 stories in the collection have not been published anywhere before).

I should also give a wee mention here that The Survival of Thomas Ford is a finalist in the eFestival of Words Best of the Independent Ebooks Awards
